    Mel Beaton

    Partner

Mel Beaton was one of the founding partners of Hammerberg Lawyers LLP in 1999. Today, he acts as co-manager of the firm and leads the Business Law and Real Estate departments. He has practiced law for more than 25 years.

Mel has acted as lead counsel in some of the province’s largest valued real estate transactions. He typically handles business acquisitions and dispositions of varying sizes along with corporate re-organizations, commercial transactions and agreements including technology and licensing agreements.

Mel’s clients frequently require his expertise on their real estate developments, sub-divisions, land acquisitions, commercial and construction projects, purchase, sale, finance and lease transactions. He is also called upon for single and multi-phase strata plan developments, bylaw issues, and fundamental changes, such as amalgamations, winding-up procedures and changes to common property and strata plans.

Mel started his career in the technology sector. As principal and co-owner of a technology company, he managed a team of consulting engineers for almost 10 years. His background in business gave him a solid appreciation of the practical “real world” concerns and objectives of the clients he serves today.

He then joined a medium-sized, broad-based law firm where he built his practice conducting business law and real estate transactions, including real estate development and strata law as well as continuing to serve technology clients.

Acting as a member of his strata council for seven years gave Mel hands-on experience with the processes and practical issues facing strata councils, owners and strata property managers. This experience has greatly complemented his skills in strata property law.

As an adjunct to his practice, Mel frequently contributes as an author to professional publications and legal education programs. He also provides volunteer assistance to a number of community youth sports associations and charitable organizations, including community football and lacrosse associations and Education without Borders, a charity which provides educational support and programs for underprivileged and impoverished individuals.

David is acknowledged by the legal community as a leader in personal injury and has received “Distinguished” status by peer review ratings from the legal publication, Martindale Hubbell, since 2008.

David concentrates on personal injury management and litigation. He has focused on this area for 25 of his 30 years of his professional practice. Throughout this time, David has settled and litigated thousands of cases involving a wide range of issues related to personal injury matters. He also has extensive experience prosecuting catastrophic personal injury claims including paraplegia and quadriplegia and traumatic brain injury, as well as wrongful death claims.

David always works hard to achieve fair, equitable recovery for his clients through detailed preparation, skilful negotiation and—if necessary—trial advocacy. Through his team, he co-ordinates and arranges comprehensive medical, vocational and economic assessments through trusted professionals to better determine the impact of the injuries suffered by his clients, to explore treatment options, and to set the proper foundation for appropriate compensation levels for his clients. Put simply, David genuinely cares, and works hard to make sure that every client relationship gets built on a solid foundation of trust, respect and understanding.

Before David focused solely on representing personal injury victims, he practiced insurance defence litigation, including ICBC litigation, with a prominent Vancouver law firm. He attributes much of his current success to the experiences and insights he obtained early in his career representing insurers’ interests.

David feels very fortunate to have developed a robust referral-based clientele, which extends across the province, including referrals not only from past and current clients, but also from other legal and medical professionals, as well as the Public Guardian and Trustee.

Jim has been involved in high-profile, precedent-setting cases at all levels of court. He has achieved significant seven figure awards for his clients in complex circumstances.

In addition to his acknowledged legal skills and effective advocacy, another hallmark of Jim’s practice is the comprehensive client care he brings to his clients’ matters. The traumatic effects from an accident can have devastating consequences on one’s life and Jim considers all functional impairments– domestic, vocational, and recreational. He steps into his clients’ lives and works to remove obstacles to recovery and make each action as positive as possible.

From decades of work advocating for the injured, Jim has amassed an impressive list of medical specialists he calls upon for the benefit of his clients, obtaining specialist appointments that are otherwise very difficult to secure.

Jim’s practice is based on the premise that communication, trust and respect are the cornerstones of a good client-lawyer relationship. Further, he considers it a privilege to represent individuals who have placed their trust in him.

    Joel Zanatta

    Partner

Joel Zanatta, Partner, has practiced personal injury law for 15 years. He began his legal career at a large insurance firm in downtown Vancouver. For five years, Joel represented large insurance companies, lawyers, doctors and a variety of other professionals. As such, he developed a keen understanding of ICBC and how other insurance companies defend personal injury claims.

Joel is a highly focused and determined advocate for people who need strategic yet straightforward legal advice following all types of accidents resulting in simple to complex injuries. He leverages his knowledge of the insurance-company side to his clients’ tactical advantage. He anticipates the defendant’s approach and plans accordingly.

Notably, Joel was involved in a precedent-setting BC Court of Appeal decision that resulted in requiring ICBC to extend benefits to a catastrophically injured motorcyclist operating a vehicle with a learner’s driver’s licence. He brings the same vigor to all his clients’ legal challenges, including taking time to update his clients on a regular basis so that they feel involved and fully informed throughout the entire litigation process.
